Binon-Coquard — Millésime 2016

Millésime 2016

Binon-Coquard | Brut | Vintage 2016

Strawberry jam, quince jelly, and a hint of cocoa – anyone who thinks of Meunier as just "simple fruit" should try the Millésime 2016 from Binon-Coquard – if they can still get a bottle.

That this 100% Meunier champagne is so impressive borders on miraculous. The year 2016 was an extreme challenge in Champagne – especially in the Côte des Bar. Late frost in April and a rainy spring caused the harvest to shrink dramatically. But the hot late summer saved the remaining grapes and gave them incredible aromatic density.

The result is just 2,000 bottles. A tiny production that shows 2016 was a year for real winemakers: low quantity, but with quality that absolutely convinces.

On the nose, it's this blend of ripe plums and roasted walnuts that doesn't really scream Meunier. On the palate, it's wonderfully full-bodied and wine-like. You taste the candied orange and that typical Meunier juiciness, perfectly supported by the dosage.

After over 7 years on the lees, this wine has developed a structure that goes far beyond the ordinary.
