Lush and Generous
After two difficult years, 1982 brought relief. A warm, sunny summer with ideal conditions allowed the grapes to ripen perfectly. The harvest was large — both quantitatively and qualitatively. Sugar levels were high, acidity moderate, the grapes healthy.
Character and Development
The 1982 vintage produced generous, fruit-forward champagnes with soft acidity and immediate approachability. It was a vintage everyone liked — critics and consumers alike. The Prestige Cuvées from the great houses were opulent and charming.
With the perspective of over 40 years, it becomes clear: 1982 was not a vintage for eternity. The soft acidity that made it so accessible in its youth also meant less aging potential than the taut 1979s or 1985s. Anyone opening a bottle today will find mature, honey-colored champagnes with notes of dried fruits, caramel, and nougat — beautiful, but ephemeral.
Historically interesting: 1982 was also a legendary vintage in Bordeaux. The parallel shows how much weather influences all of France equally — even though Champagne lies 300 kilometers north of Bordeaux.
No Personal Tastings Yet
From the 1982 vintage, I have not yet tasted any champagne. This is partly due to availability, partly because not every vintage comes to market as a Millésimé. Many producers use the base wines from 1982 primarily for their non-vintage assemblages — which doesn't mean the quality was poor. A vintage doesn't have to be declared as a Millésimé to be good.
Should the opportunity arise to open a 1982, this post will be supplemented with personal impressions.
