Vintage 2017 — Charming and Uncomplicated

A Vintage Without Drama

After the extreme year of 2016 (frost, hail, tiny harvest), 2017 brought relief. A warm spring with early flowering, a sunny summer without extreme heat, and a harvest that began already at the end of August — significantly earlier than the historical average.

The grapes were healthy, ripe and with moderate acidity levels. Not a vintage of extremes, but one of pleasant middle ground. The base wines immediately showed their strength: fruit, accessibility, charm. And their weakness: less structure and tension than the taut 2016s or the concentrated 2015s.

Style of the Vintage

2017 is the vintage for those who want to enjoy champagne without complications:

  • Bright fruit — Apple, pear, peach, citrus blossom
  • Soft texture — Creamy, round, inviting
  • Moderate acidity — Enough for freshness, not enough for austerity
  • Immediate accessibility — No waiting required
  • Drinking pleasure — Champagnes you enjoy drinking and finish quickly

What 2017 lacks is the depth and complexity of great vintages. These champagnes will not develop over decades — they are made for now, and that's perfectly fine.

In the Context of Its Neighbors

2017 stands stylistically between two heavyweights: The taut, long-lived 2016 and the hot, concentrated 2018. In direct comparison, 2017 seems almost modest — less intellectual than 2016, less powerful than 2018. But therein lies its appeal: 2017 is the everyday champagne among vintages. The champagne you open without thinking twice. The one you pour for friends who want "simply a good champagne."

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were evenly matched in 2017 — no clear winner. The best champagnes come from growers who emphasize the fruitiness of the vintage rather than working against it. Those who confront 2017 with aggressive barrel aging or Zero Dosage get a thin, unsatisfying champagne. Those who allow the natural fruit to shine are rewarded.

6 champagnes from 2017 in my collection — enough to say: A likeable, uncomplicated vintage that knows its role. Not every vintage needs to be a century vintage. Sometimes you simply need a good champagne for the moment.

My Tastings

6 champagnes from this vintage — a manageable but consistent sample. What they have in common: an inviting, fruit-forward character that invites immediate enjoyment. None of the six blew me away, but none disappointed. A reliable result in a year that promised exactly that — reliability instead of brilliance.
