Vintage 2018 — Sun-blessed and approachable

A generous vintage

2018 was warm and sunny — but less extreme than its successor 2019. Champagne experienced a long, consistently warm summer without the brutal heat spikes that characterized 2019. The result: ripe, aromatic grapes with surprisingly good acidity levels.

I've tasted 24 champagnes from 2018. My impression: This vintage is a crowd-pleaser — approachable, charming and immediately understandable.

The weather

After a wet winter, vegetation started early. Spring was warm, flowering was complete and swift — promising a great vintage as early as June. Summer brought sustained warmth and sufficient rain, so the vines didn't suffer drought stress.

The harvest began at the end of August — significantly earlier than the long-term average. The grapes were healthy, with moderate acidity and good sugar ripeness.

Style of the vintage

2018 sits stylistically between the austerity of 2016 and the opulence of 2019:

  • Golden fruit — Yellow apple, apricot, ripe pear
  • Soft mouthfeel — Creamy, round, inviting
  • Moderate acidity — Enough for tension, not enough for severity
  • Complexity — The best show depth and aging potential
  • Approachability — Many 2018s are drinking beautifully now

Chardonnay vs. Pinot

Both main grape varieties delivered excellent material in 2018. Blanc de Blancs from 2018 combine creaminess with a fine mineral note — less taut than 2016, but more elegant than 2019. Pinot-driven champagnes show ripe red fruit and a silky palate.

2018 is the vintage I recommend to people who want to discover vintage champagne. Not too austere, not too opulent — just right as an introduction. And yet with enough depth to excite experienced champagne drinkers.
