Egly-Ouriet — Les Prémices 2018

Les Prémices 2018

Egly-Ouriet | Prestige Cuvée | Vintage 2018

They say champagne is an experience for all the senses – and how differently it can taste shows up in a glass comparison. I tested the - Les Prémices (Base 2018) in four glasses:

1️⃣ Champagne flute from: As expected, a complete disappointment – the champagne seemed bitter and one-dimensional. The narrow opening completely suppresses the aromas. This is exactly why: #saynotoflutes.

2️⃣ No. 4 Champagne Glass: Perfect! It brings out the elegance of the Egly-Ouriet beautifully: delicate aromas of white flowers, brioche and a beautiful balance between fruit and acidity.

3️⃣ One-for-All - Gold Edition: Also a strong choice! The difference from the Josephinen glass was minimal, but the aromas seemed slightly less concentrated.

4️⃣ Burgundy glass: Too extreme for this champagne. The large aroma spaces made the champagne heavier and sweeter, which distorted the elegant profile.

Why is this the case? The glass shape influences how the aromas unfold and how the champagne works on the tongue. Wide glasses emphasize sweetness and fruit, narrow glasses concentrate the perlage, but can block the aromas.

The right compromise? An all-rounder like the Gabrielglas or more specialized champagne glasses like the Josephinen glass!

In this example, glass No. 1️⃣ and No. 4️⃣ unfortunately perform worse, which here is due to the glass shape and the champagne. The Riedel glass would probably be the clear winner with a powerful Burgundy red wine.

From Eisch I have the white wine glass from the SENSIPLUS line, which also performs great. The Fatto a Mano champagne glass and the Dom Pérignon glass from are definitely still on my wish list.

So I'll definitely keep comparing glasses and I'm really glad there are so many fantastic champagnes – otherwise you couldn't properly try out all these great glasses.

Tasting Notes

Elegant champagne with delicate aromas of white flowers and brioche, plus a beautiful balance between fruit and acidity.
