Champagne Bruyen

Champagne Bruyen

I've tasted 4 champagnes from Champagne Bruyen -- and this house captivated me with its uncompromising dedication to Pinot Meunier. Bruyen shows what this often underestimated grape variety can achieve when approached with respect and craftsmanship. The vines come from the Vallée de la Marne, the Montagne de Reims, and the Aube -- a broad terroir spectrum.

Terroir and Location

The Vallée de la Marne is the heart of Pinot Meunier. Here, on the slopes along the Marne, the grape variety finds ideal conditions. Bruyen additionally uses parcels on the Montagne de Reims and in the Aube, which gives the champagnes an additional dimension. Particularly impressive: the Lieu-Dit bottlings from vines planted in 1940 -- over 80-year-old vines that deliver a concentration and depth that younger plantings cannot achieve.

Philosophy and Style

Bruyen is a Meunier specialist. The consistent work with Brut Nature and Extra Brut shows that purism is paramount here. No sugar to mask, no wood to embellish -- the wines must stand naked. And they do. The oak barrel aging for the Lieu-Dit cuvées is not a contradiction: it's part of the vinification, not decoration.

The Range

Four cuvées that show Meunier in different facets: from the Grande Reserve as an assemblage to the Lieu-Dit bottlings from the 1940 vines. Plus a Rosé de Saignée.

The Cuvées in Detail

Lieu Dit Le Verre de Vin

A purist 100% Meunier from over 80-year-old vines -- planted in 1940. On the nose, fine woody notes and floral touches, on the palate extremely fresh and lively with elegant citrus notes. The concentration of the old vines is magical: a density and depth rarely found in Meunier. Five years on the lees and Brut Nature make this champagne one of the most impressive Meunier champagnes I've ever drunk.

Type: Brut Nature | Vintage: 2019 | Grape Varieties: Pinot Meunier

Rosé Héritage

A powerful, intense Rosé de Saignée from 100% Pinot Meunier. Dark forest berries, cassis and raspberry on the nose, on the palate purist and very dry with exciting structure from oak barrel aging. Dosed Extra Brut. This isn't a harmless summer rosé -- this is a serious wine with structure and depth.

My tip: With grilled lamb or a robust Coq au Vin. The intensity of the rosé needs food with substance.

Type: Rosé | Vintage: 2023 | Grape Varieties: Pinot Meunier

Grande Réserve

The most accessible champagne in the range -- an assemblage of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Straightforward and fresh with clear citrus tension from lime and quince, complemented by creamy notes from malolactic fermentation. On the finish, the Pinot Noir brings darker berries and roundness. Five years of aging give the wine beautiful depth without taking away the freshness.

Type: Extra Brut | Vintage: 2019 | Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

Le Verre de Vin Parcellaire

The second bottling from the 1940 vines -- initially restrained in the glass, then a mix of wood, ripe fruit and fine spice unfolds with honey and citrus notes. A slightly bitter pull on the finish makes it exciting. Compared to the other Lieu Dit, this bottling shows stronger oak presence and somewhat more maturity.

Type: Brut Nature | Vintage: 2019 | Grape Varieties: Pinot Meunier

What makes Bruyen special?

The 1940 vines. Period. Over 80-year-old Pinot Meunier vines are an absolute rarity in Champagne. The concentration and depth that these vines deliver make the Lieu-Dit bottlings something truly special. Add to that the consistent Brut Nature approach that shows Meunier unadorned.

My tip: If possible, try the Lieu Dit Le Verre de Vin. This is Meunier at a level that most people wouldn't think possible.

Petite Dame Noire 2022

Do you remember the "Petite Dame Noire" from Bruyen & Macquart ()?

After I had already drunk this exact bottle once in November, it was time for the second date recently. The terrace and the first rays of sunshine with T-shirt vibes in 2026 were, in my opinion, a good contrast to the first time.
