Champagne A. Lété: Craftsmanship in Damery since 1890

Champagne A. Lété is a Récoltant-Manipulant from Damery in the Vallée de la Marne, founded in 1890 by Auguste Lété and his wife Jeanne, daughter of a winemaking family. Today the fourth generation runs the house, Frédéric and Laetitia Lété, who took over in 2010. With Clara and Tom, the fifth generation is already waiting in the wings, a family business in the best sense.

They farm parcels in Damery and Fleury-la-Rivière, with a clear focus on Meunier (50%), complemented by Chardonnay (30%) and Pinot Noir (20%). In 2024, they added HVE4 and VDC (Viticulture Durable en Champagne) certifications.

History

Auguste Lété founded the estate in 1890 together with Jeanne in Damery. Jeanne came from a winemaking family, Auguste already brought Champagne experience. In 1918, after his father's death, Jacques Lété took over the estate at just 18 years old, actively supported by his mother Jeanne.

Philippe Lété, son of Jacques, took over in 1975 together with his wife Annick. Philippe developed the vineyards between Damery and Fleury-la-Rivière and shaped the direction of the Maison sustainably.

In 2010, the fourth generation stepped up: Frédéric and Laetitia Lété now run the family business together. Since the early 2020s, Clara and Tom are also active in the operation, bringing fresh energy to the tradition. The family carefully documents their history, photos from the Saint-Vincent festival in 1910 and from the 1973 harvest testify to over a century of winemaking craftsmanship.

Vignoble & Soil

The vines grow in Damery and Fleury-la-Rivière, both in the Marne Valley. Meunier is the king grape with half the surface area, very typical for the Vallée de la Marne, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir round out the picture. The calcareous, permeable soils with their good water retention capacity are the real capital, and preserving their riches is the family's stated goal.

Viticulture & Sustainability

They work according to the principles of Viticulture raisonnée, integrated viticulture, with lots of hand work and precise observation of each individual parcel. In 2024, A. Lété received HVE4 certification as well as the VDC (Viticulture Durable en Champagne) label, a clear commitment to environmentally compatible work. Patience and care take precedence over quick effects.

Vinification

Vinification is done in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks that preserve the freshness of the base wines, complemented by enameled concrete tanks that are kept in perfect condition, a piece of tradition that combines permanence with modern standards. Malolactic fermentation is carried out.

Particularly characteristic is the handwork: every bottle is riddled by hand (Remuage à la main), the Dosage liqueur is homemade, prepared from reserve wines and cane sugar. Over 45 years of pressing experience are in the team, and the philosophy sums it up: "Huile de coude", elbow grease, maximum handwork instead of shortcuts. The Dosage ranges from 0 g/l (Brut Nature) to around 40 g/l (Demi-Sec) depending on the cuvée.
