Champagne Bruyen — Deeply Meunier since 1850

Champagne Bruyen is a Récoltant-Manipulant from Reims (51100, Marne), since 1850 with a clear focus on Pinot Meunier. The maison is now run by Louis, and their Instagram bio says it all: "Deeply Meunier since 1850".

The estate is located on Rue Libergier in Reims, with vineyards spread across the Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne. The portfolio features parcellaire cuvées from old Meunier vines alongside clean Chardonnay-Pinot Noir blends — all vinified with a purist approach, minimal dosage, and partial oak barrel aging.

History

Maison Bruyen was founded in 1850 with a focus on Pinot Meunier. The family used to transport their champagne by bicycle back then — a detail that remains part of their identity today.

In 1940, those Meunier vines were planted in the lieu-dit "Le Verre de Vin" that now form the basis for their parcellaire cuvée. These 80+ year old vines provide the grapes for the 100% Meunier Brut Nature, which ages nine months in oak barrels and five years on the lees.

Viticulture & Sustainability

The focus is on old vines and parcel-specific vinification. The parcellaire "Le Verre de Vin" comes from vines planted in 1940 in the Vallée de la Marne — unusually old for Meunier. The farming follows no certified organic label but takes a minimal-interventionist approach in both vineyard and cellar.

Vinification

Bruyen works with both stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. The parcellaire "Le Verre de Vin" ages nine months in barrel, the Rosé Héritage three months. Malolactic fermentation is carefully controlled: Le Verre de Vin skips it entirely (0% malo), while the Grande Réserve goes through it completely (100% malo).

Dosage ranges from 0 to 4 g/l. Le Verre de Vin comes as Brut Nature with no dosage at all, the Rosé Héritage with 2 g/l as Extra Brut, and the Grande Réserve with 4 g/l also as Extra Brut. All three cuvées show the purist approach: minimal intervention, clear varietal expression, extended aging.

The Cuvées in Detail

Lieu Dit Le Verre de Vin

100% Meunier from 1940 vines in the lieu-dit of the same name in the Vallée de la Marne. Nine months oak barrel, no malolactic fermentation, five years on lees. Brut Nature, 0 g/l dosage. Base 2019. Subtle wood notes, floral hints, citrus, extremely fresh despite the high vine age.

100% Meunier (1940 vines) · 0 g/l (Brut Nature) · 60 months aging · Lieu-dit "Le Verre de Vin", Vallée de la Marne

Rosé Héritage

Rosé de saignée from 100% Meunier, Montagne de Reims. Three months oak barrel, 15–16 months on lees, 2 g/l dosage (Extra Brut). Base 2023. Bold and intense with dark forest berries, cassis, raspberry — very dry, very purist.

100% Meunier (Saignée) · 2 g/l (Extra Brut) · 16 months aging · Montagne de Reims

Grande Réserve

50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims. Complete malolactic fermentation, five years on lees, 4 g/l dosage (Extra Brut). Base 2019. Straightforward, fresh, clear citrus tension (lime, quince), creamy notes from the malo, darker berries in the finish.

50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir · 4 g/l (Extra Brut) · 60 months aging · Montagne de Reims

My Tastings

  • Le Verre de Vin Parcellaire (2019) — November 10, 2025
  • Grande Réserve (2019) — December 11, 2025
  • Rosé Héritage (2023) — March 6, 2026
  • Lieu Dit Le Verre de Vin (2019) — March 10, 2026

The parcellaire from 1940 vines impressed me most: zero grams dosage, nine months barrel, no malo — and still no harsh edge. The rosé de saignée is the opposite of pretty in pink: intense, dry, almost savory. The Grande Réserve shows that Bruyen can do classic blends too — but the heart remains Meunier.
