Champagne Météyer

Champagne Météyer

I've tasted 4 champagnes from Champagne Météyer — enough to form a solid impression. The house is based in the Vallée de la Marne, Aube / Côte des Bar, works with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and shows a clear signature in its range.

Meteyer is a producer that convinced me from the start. From the first bottles, it was clear: this is someone working with intelligence and passion. The house combines grapes from the Vallée de la Marne and the Aube into a range that unites artisanal precision with enjoyable accessibility. No champagne from Meteyer tries to be something it's not — and that's exactly what makes them so convincing.

The Vallée de la Marne and the Aube are two regions that couldn't be more stylistically different. The Vallée de la Marne brings the fruity warmth of Pinot Meunier, the Aube the mineral power of Pinot Noir. That Meteyer works both regions gives the house a stylistic breadth that's rare among small growers.

I find the courage to make Brut Nature particularly remarkable. Producing champagne without Dosage is a risk — there's no safety net, no sugar addition to mask weaknesses. If the base wine isn't right, you taste it immediately. That Meteyer brings its Exclusif to market as Brut Nature shows confidence in their own work.

Terroir and Location

The champagnes from Champagne Météyer come from the Vallée de la Marne, Aube / Côte des Bar. The Vallée de la Marne is the home of Pinot Meunier — fruit-forward, accessible, charming.

The combination of both terroirs allows Meteyer to select the right grapes for each Cuvée. The clay soils of the Vallée de la Marne give the assemblages body and fruit, while the Kimmeridge limestone soils of the Aube contribute structure and minerality. In the cellar, work is done classically — stainless steel tanks for clarity, no excessive oak influence.

The Range

Champagne Météyer offers 4 different cuvées that I was able to try. In the program: Blanc de Noirs, Rosé, vintage champagnes. A focused range that puts quality over quantity.

The Cuvées in Detail

Exclusif 2019

A 100% Pinot Meunier as Brut Nature with juicy fruit and precise acidity. The missing Dosage creates a clear, contrasting character that pairs beautifully with creamy Asian dishes. Highlights: juicy fruit, Brut Nature, pure Meunier, food-pairing talent.

The Exclusif is the star of the range for me. 100% Pinot Meunier as Brut Nature — not everyone dares to do that. The combination of juicy fruit and missing Dosage creates a contrast that's exciting on the palate: simultaneously round and angular, fruity and tart. With creamy Asian dishes — like a Thai curry or a Japanese eggplant gratin — this is a perfect pairing.

My tip: Anyone who wants to understand Pinot Meunier as a grape variety should start here. The Exclusif shows the grape pure, without Dosage and without blending partners.

Type: Blanc de Noirs | Vintage: 2019 | Grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

Cuvée Marine

Fine salinity and freshness that harmonizes perfectly with oysters. Citrus notes and a present but elegant acidity characterize this maritime-seeming champagne. Highlights: salty, citrusy, maritime, fresh.

The Cuvée Marine rightfully bears its name: here you taste the sea. The salty minerality and citrus freshness make this champagne the ideal companion for seafood. The assemblage from all three grape varieties ensures balance — the Chardonnay brings freshness, Pinot Noir structure and Meunier the fruity finish.

Type: Millésimé | Vintage: 2020 | Grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

Rosé Brut

Fruity but not sweet, with ripe strawberries, red currants and a hint of cherry. Elegant and clear with fine, creamy perlage. Highlights: ripe strawberries, red currants, creamy perlage, elegant.

A rosé that hits exactly the right mark: fruity enough to immediately appeal, but dry enough to be taken seriously. The creamy perlage gives it a silky texture that dances over the light fruit aromas. Not a cerebral champagne, but one for the heart.

Type: Rosé | Grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

Réserve Brut

Light golden champagne with fine perlage, aromas of yellow apple, citrus peel and brioche. On the palate dry, clear and taut with fresh acidity and straightforward structure. Highlights: yellow apple, citrus peel, brioche, taut acidity.

The Réserve Brut is the solid foundation of the range and an honest entry point. Yellow apple and citrus peel on the nose, taut acidity on the palate — this is crafted cleanly, without surprises, but also without disappointments. A champagne you can open for dinner without worry, without having to think about pairing.

Type: Brut | Grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

My Tastings

Conclusion

For me, Meteyer belongs among the producers you should know. The combination of Vallée-de-la-Marne charm and Aube minerality results in a range that's more broadly positioned than most small producers. The Exclusif as 100% Meunier Brut Nature is a real statement — and the other cuvées show that here work is consistently clean and done with conviction.
