Montagne de Reims is one of the most fascinating regions in Champagne for me. While everyone talks about the big names from Épernay or Aÿ, true champagne gems are hidden in the hills south of Reims – and the best part: many of them can be found for under 50 euros.

Why Montagne de Reims is so special

What excites me about this region is the dominance of Pinot Noir. Here, powerful, structured champagnes are created with a depth that you rarely find in this price range. The chalk soils and cooler climate at higher elevations create ideal conditions for this red grape variety.

I find it fascinating how differently the champagnes can taste depending on their location. A Bouzy has a completely different personality than a Verzenay, even though both consist mainly of Pinot Noir.

My impression is that in Montagne de Reims, you often find better value for money with smaller winegrowers. While the big houses reserve their Premier and Grand Cru sites for their prestige cuvées, many smaller producers sell great champagnes from the same sites at significantly lower prices.

What I've learned: The abbreviation "RM" on the label is often a good sign. These winegrowers ferment their grapes themselves and usually have a very personal touch. Especially in Montagne de Reims, you can find true gems this way.
