Blanc de Blancs — When Only Chardonnay Speaks

White from White

Blanc de Blancs — "white from whites" — means: This champagne was made exclusively from white grapes. In practice, this almost always means 100% Chardonnay, since Chardonnay is the only major white grape variety in Champagne.

Technically, Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Gris (Fromenteau) could also be used — but these are rarities that together make up less than 1% of the vineyard area.

Why Blanc de Blancs is Special

Where a classic Brut champagne lives from the assemblage of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, Blanc de Blancs stands alone. No Pinot provides structure, no Meunier provides fruit — Chardonnay must deliver everything itself. And that's exactly what makes this style so fascinating: it has nowhere to hide.

Good Blanc de Blancs shows:

  • Precision — Like a scalpel instead of a bread knife
  • Minerality — Chalk, limestone, sometimes almost salty
  • Citrus freshness — Lemon, grapefruit, green apple
  • Elegance — Fine bubbles, sleek, never heavy
  • Aging potential — Great Blanc de Blancs can age for decades

The Homeland: Côte des Blancs

The epicenter for Blanc de Blancs is the Côte des Blancs south of Épernay. Here, on the chalky slopes of Cramant, Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Chouilly, Chardonnay grows like nowhere else in Champagne.

The soil is almost pure chalk — Belemnite chalk from the upper Cretaceous period. The vines root deep into this porous rock, which stores water while providing perfect drainage. The result: grapes with high acidity, moderate sugar, and that unmistakable mineral signature.

In the Glass: What to Look For?

Young Blanc de Blancs is often tight and restrained. The acidity dominates, the aromas are citrus-driven and closed. Don't worry: this is intentional. With air and time, the champagnes open up and show their true depth.

Mature Blanc de Blancs transforms: citrus becomes candied fruit, chalk becomes brioche, austerity becomes creaminess. Experiencing this transformation is one of the greatest pleasures in the champagne world.

Blanc de Blancs is champagne in its purest form. No compromise, no assemblage diplomacy — just Chardonnay and terroir.

My Experience

61 Blanc de Blancs in my collection — from approachable entry-level cuvées to Grand Cru monuments from Le Mesnil. The style is extremely diverse: from stainless steel-fresh summer champagne to barrel-aged meditation wine, everything is represented.
