Gruet: Sélection Brut

Gruet: Sélection Brut

The Cuvée

Gruet is a grower house from Buxeuil in the Côte des Bar, the southern part of Champagne in the Aube. The Sélection Brut is their entry-level cuvée, and it convinces exactly as such: fruity, accessible and uncomplicated to drink, with that fruit-forward style typical of the Côte des Bar. Perhaps a touch sweet on the palate, which has less to do with the dosage than with the natural richness of the region. A champagne for spontaneous moments, solo as an aperitif or as a base for cocktails. The house surely has more profound cuvées to discover, but as an affordable, honest entry point it does its job well.

My Tastings

The Gruet Sélection Brut is the cheapest bottle of champagne I've ever bought, and naturally a test of whether the price shows in the glass. The result: a positive surprise.

Sure, it doesn't play in the league of the great terroir artists, but it brings exactly what you expect from an uncomplicated champagne: fruity, accessible and just easy to drink. Maybe even minimally too sweet, though that's less about the dosage and more about the naturally fruit-forward style that's typical for the Côte des Bar.

This uncomplicated character is exactly what makes it interesting, not just solo as an aperitif, but also as a base for champagne cocktails. A champagne for spontaneous moments, without big expectations. House Gruet surely has more exciting cuvées to discover, the entry-level Brut alone isn't enough to evaluate the producer's potential.
