Bonnaire-Clouet

Bonnaire-Clouet

I've tasted 5 champagnes from Bonnaire-Clouet -- a house that impresses with its access to some of the finest vineyard sites in Champagne. From Grand-Cru parcels on the Côte des Blancs to Premier-Cru sites on the Montagne de Reims: the range of Terroirs is reflected in a remarkably diverse portfolio.

Terroir and Location

The combination of Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims is a stroke of luck. The chalk soils of the Côte des Blancs deliver mineral, elegant Chardonnay base wines, while the Montagne de Reims contributes powerful Pinot Noir structure. Add Grand-Cru and Premier-Cru classifications -- this is first-class raw material. Particularly the parcels in Cramant, one of the most iconic Grand-Cru villages, give the Blanc de Blancs an unmistakable salinity.

Philosophy and Style

Bonnaire-Clouet works with low Dosage and uses oak aging for the premium Cuvées. The champagnes are consistently dry, precise and Terroir-focused. What particularly impresses me: the ability to master very different styles at a high level -- from cool rosé to oxidative prestige Cuvées to classic Blanc de Blancs.

The Range

Five Cuvées that cover the entire spectrum: rosé, Extra Brut, Blanc de Blancs and a prestige Cuvée with extended aging. Nothing is left to chance here.

The Cuvées in Detail

Rosé d'Assemblage

A rosé that's different from most others. Cool, focused and with a chalky, mineral tension that's typical of the Côte des Blancs. Red fruit is only present in the background -- instead freshness and texture dominate. Those expecting fruity, appealing rosé champagnes will be surprised here. This rosé convinces through tension rather than effect.

My tip: Perfect with smoked salmon or tuna tartare.

Type: Rosé | Vintage: 2020 | Grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

Love Story 2012

The star of the range. Oxidative depth with a warm, nutty character from extended lees aging in oak barrels. Gentle, elegant acidity and a fascinating dry, powdery aroma. This champagne truly blossoms with food -- on its own it's almost too complex, but with a Comté or chicken with morels it becomes an experience. The 2012 vintage was exceptional, and you can taste it.

Type: Extra Brut | Vintage: 2012 | Grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

Les Versants Réserve

The all-rounder in the range. Citrus, white peach and brioche notes, complemented by fine spice from light oak aging. The low Dosage provides tension and freshness without heaviness. A champagne you can open for many occasions -- from aperitif to light main course.

Type: Extra Brut | Grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

Les Harengs 2021

Present aroma of toasted hazelnuts, warm and inviting. Plus a fine, salty vein that provides balance. Clear, fresh and precise with character and structure. A Blanc de Blancs that shows even young vintages can have depth at Bonnaire-Clouet. The name "Les Harengs" refers to the parcel -- Terroir at its finest.

Type: Blanc de Blancs | Vintage: 2021 | Grape varieties: Chardonnay

Le Bateau - Cramant 2016

Cramant Grand Cru in pure form. Precise, salty-fresh with crisp minerality and fine creaminess. The maritime character of the Terroir is reflected in a vibrant salinity that flows through the entire palate. After ten years of aging, this champagne shows a remarkable balance between youthfulness and depth.

Compared to the Les Harengs, Le Bateau is significantly more concentrated and serious -- this is about Grand-Cru expression, not accessibility.

My tip: With oysters or sea urchin -- the salinity of the champagne and the iodine notes of the seafood complement each other perfectly.

Type: Blanc de Blancs | Vintage: 2016 | Grape varieties: Chardonnay

What Makes Bonnaire-Clouet Special?

The combination of first-class sites and craftsmanship. From the Love Story 2012 to the Rosé d'Assemblage, this shows a house that masters different styles at the highest level. Particularly the Blanc-de-Blancs line from Cramant ranks among the best I've tasted in this category.
