Louis Morette: Grand Réserve Brut

Louis Morette: Grand Réserve Brut

The Cuvée

Louis Morette is not a winegrower, but a brand. The champagne is produced and bottled by G.H. Martel, one of the largest houses in Épernay, in collaboration with Ernest Rapeneau. If you're looking for a small Récoltant story here, you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for a cleanly made Négociant champagne at an everyday price, you're exactly right.

That's precisely the appeal of this bottle. The Grand Réserve is a classic assemblage of the three grape varieties of Champagne: Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay, with a dosage in the classic Brut range of around eight to nine grams. No terroir statement, no manifesto, just solid craftsmanship on a large scale: fresh, clean, balanced, with a crisp finish and a slightly creamy texture.

That such a bottle ends up on supermarket shelves and still earns ninety Eichelmann points says something about what a well-run large house can deliver at a small price. An honest all-rounder that doesn't want to be more than it is, and that's exactly why it works.

My Tastings

The Louis Morette Grand Réserve Brut is a supermarket find (17.99 euros at Hofer) without great expectations, and a positive surprise.

Freshness, clarity, structure, no great depth, but a very balanced all-rounder with a clean finish. 90 points from Eichelmann, and that's no small feat. In his scale, that means: excellent. For a champagne under 20 euros, that's more than decent.

Assemblage of Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay. Dosage: approx. 8-9 g/l (Brut). Served at about 8-9 degrees. Style: fresh, balanced, slightly creamy.

Sometimes between the top cuvées stand exactly such bottles: accessible, well-made, and simply there when you need them. And that's exactly why they often end up closer to reality in the cellar than the big names.
