Champagne Ernest Rapeneau

Champagne Ernest Rapeneau

Champagne Ernest Rapeneau is a négociant house from Hautvillers in the Vallée de la Marne, founded 1901 by Ernest Rapeneau. Since 1983, Christophe Rapeneau has led the house in the 4th generation. The house sources grape material from over 100 pressoirs and focuses on assemblage diversity.

History

Ernest Rapeneau founded his champagne and wine trading business in 1901 in Hautvillers, the village considered the cradle of Champagne. After the establishment of the Champagne-Viticole boundaries in 1927, Ernest specialized exclusively in champagne trading. The birth of the AOC Champagne in 1936 marked the pinnacle for the already renowned business.

In 1944, François and Bernard Rapeneau, the second generation, joined the company. After 50 years of intensive activity, Ernest retired in 1965 and handed over management to his sons François and Bernard.

In 1983, Christophe Rapeneau joined the family business after his oenology studies at the University of Reims. Christophe modernized the cuverie and production system to guarantee the authenticity of the champagnes. Today, the 5th generation is already at work with Jean-Rémy Rapeneau.

Vinification

As a négociant, Ernest Rapeneau sources grape material from over 100 pressoirs. The focus is on rich and varied assemblages from different vineyards. Since 1983, Christophe Rapeneau has invested in modernizing the cuverie and production system to guarantee the authenticity of the champagnes.

The Cuvées in Detail

Brut

The house's classic entry-level champagne, easy-drinking with citrus notes, ripe fruit and a hint of flowers. The cuvée is approachable but without particular distinction – a solid, somewhat generic brut for everyday drinking.

Blanc de Blancs

Single-variety Chardonnay champagne that promises more profile as an alternative to the entry-level brut.

100% Chardonnay

Premier Cru

Brut from Premier Cru vineyards, which should also offer more substance than the standard brut.

Premier Cru

Rosé

Christophe Rapeneau's personal favorite. The house observes a growing market for rosé champagne, especially among female audiences.

My Tastings

Classic, easy-drinking brut with citrus, ripe fruit and a hint of flowers. Somewhat generic and without particular distinction. Entry-level cuvée that's solid but doesn't leave a lasting impression. The Blanc de Blancs or Premier Cru might be more interesting options.
