Champagne Carbon

Champagne Carbon

I've tasted 3 champagnes from Champagne Carbon -- a house best known for its spectacular collaborations with Bugatti. The carbon fiber bottles are definitely a statement, but the question remains: What's behind the packaging?

Philosophy and Style

Carbon is a house that understands champagne as a lifestyle product. The carbon fiber bottles, the Bugatti collaborations, the Luminous Editions -- this is definitely about show. But you have to be fair: the contents hold up. The champagnes are solidly made, with a warm, mature style that's particularly convincing in the older vintages.

The Cuvées work with all three classic grape varieties and show a signature that focuses on accessibility and opulence. These aren't purist minerality bombs, but champagnes that are immediately enjoyable.

The Range

Three Cuvées, including two Bugatti editions from the legendary 2002 vintage. That's a remarkably mature program -- over 20 years on the lees is unusual even for major houses.

The Cuvées in Detail

Brut Black

The entry-level champagne at Carbon. Juicy and round with enough freshness to balance spicy and rich foods on the palate. The Cuvée shows itself to be down-to-earth and versatile. Not a champagne that invites contemplation, but one that reliably works. With a burger or pizza, this is an uncomplicated but fitting choice.

Compared to the Bugatti editions, the Brut Black naturally lacks the depth and complexity that only long aging on lees can bring. But as an everyday companion, it does its job.

Type: Brut | Grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

Bugatti 2002 SL Luminous Edition

The first Bugatti collaboration -- a prestige Cuvée from the 2002 vintage in the glowing Luminous Edition bottle. Over 20 years of aging have given this champagne remarkable depth. Unfortunately, I'm missing detailed tasting notes for this specific bottling, but the 2002 vintage was outstanding in Champagne and typically delivers champagnes with enormous aging potential.

Type: Brut | Vintage: 2002

Bugatti Millésime 2002 Luminous Edition

A mature, structured vintage champagne with depth, ripe fruit, fine spice and a touch of brioche. Over two decades on the lees have given this wine a noble naturalness that only long aging can bring. The fruit is candied and warm, the acidity has integrated beautifully, and the finish is long and spicy.

Compared to the SL version, the Millésime bottling seems to be somewhat broader and more opulent, which fits well with the Bugatti concept.

My tip: Anyone looking for an aged champagne with over 20 years of aging and who has the budget will find what they're looking for here. The quality of the contents justifies the price -- even if the carbon fiber bottle naturally means a premium.

What makes Carbon special?

The packaging is unique -- no question. But the real strength lies in the 2002 vintage and the long aging. Those willing to look behind the show will find serious champagnes. The Bugatti editions aren't pure marketing products, but show real quality. The Brut Black as an entry point is solid, but not extraordinary.
