Champagne Carbon

Champagne Carbon — Carbon Fiber meets Champagne Heritage

Champagne Carbon was founded in 2018 by Alexandre Mea in Champillon (Montagne de Reims, Marne). Mea is the grandson of the 5th generation of the Devavry winemaking family and brought his grandfather's oldest reserve wines into his new maison. Carbon is a Récoltant-Manipulant (RM) and positions itself as a young, design-oriented brand with roots in traditional champagne craftsmanship.

Before the first bottle hit the market, Mea invested 1,095 days – nearly three years – in research and development. Each cuvée goes through 37 production steps. The partnership with Bugatti has been formalized since 2020; carbon fiber – the automotive brand's trademark – became the visual motif for the champagne bottles. Carbon's Instagram account has over 1.4 million followers.

History

Alexandre Mea comes from a winemaking family that has been established in Champagne for five generations – under the name Devavry. In 2015, he began working on his own maison. The development phase lasted 1,095 days and included selecting the oldest cuvées from the Devavry cellar, which would later form the basis for Carbon's prestige vintages.

Champagne Carbon was officially founded in 2018. The launch of the first cuvées took place in 2021. During the same period, the partnership with Bugatti was announced: Carbon has since produced exclusive, numbered editions for Bugatti events and customers – including the Bugatti Millésime 2002 and the SL Luminous Edition, a luminous bottle with a label hand-signed by Alexandre Mea.

Vignoble & Terroir

Carbon is located in Champillon on the Montagne de Reims. The grapes come from various terroirs: clay soils in the Vallée de la Marne supply Pinot Noir and Meunier, while Chardonnay is sourced from Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites on the Côte des Blancs. An exact hectare count or grape variety distribution is not published; the maison works with the heritage of the Devavry parcels and supplements through purchasing from classified sites.

Vinification

Carbon relies on oak barrels with natural air contact to preserve the original potential of the wines. The remuage – turning of the bottles – is done by hand to stir up the yeasts and nourish the wine with the original sediments. The long aging periods are meant to maximize aging potential. The goal is the purest expression of vines, grapes, and soils – following 37 precisely defined steps per cuvée. The dosage is around 8 g/l (Brut Black).

The Cuvées in Detail

Carbon's entry-level cuvée: 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir, 25% Meunier. Juicy, round, with enough freshness for versatile use – pairs with spicy and rich dishes. The black carbon-fiber look has become the maison's signature.
