Champagne Esprit Chapuy: Unique Monthelon 2018

Unique Monthelon 2018

Esprit Chapuy | Brut Nature | Vintage 2018

This cuvée belongs to Esprit Chapuy's prestige line UNIQUE: every cuvée in this range carries the name of its cru, in this case Unique Monthelon, the sister piece to Unique Les Dormans 2018.

Monthelon lies southwest of Épernay, at the transition to the Côte des Blancs, so technically it sits within classic Chardonnay territory. Yet the terroir of this particular parcel is noticeably more clay heavy than the Côte des Blancs, and that's exactly why Meunier is planted here: vines over 60 years old that give this cuvée its concentration.

The Story Behind the HOMMAGE

The label carries the addition "HOMMAGE", and it comes with a real family story: the maternal grandfather traditionally used this clay rich terroir for his Coteaux Champenois Rouge, the still red wine of Champagne, which also served him as the base for his Rosé d'Assemblage. The lettering is a wink to his work: the same parcel that once produced red wine now carries a single varietal Meunier vintage Champagne.

72 months of aging on the lees (disgorged in December 2024) give the wine depth without smoothing out the direct, unpadded character of Meunier.

Tasting Notes

Floral notes meet unripe stone fruit, the texture taut and mineral. Meunier in its most direct form, nothing padded.
