Champagne Haton et Filles: Solo de Meunier

Champagne Haton et Filles: Solo de Meunier

The Cuvée

Champagne Haton et Filles is a grower house from Damery in the Vallée de la Marne, right in the heartland of Pinot Meunier. The Solo de Meunier makes this origin its mission: a single-variety Blanc de Noirs from one hundred percent Meunier, aged in stainless steel tanks.

The name delivers what it promises, a solo performance with power. Ripe apple, almost cinnamon-like compote, lots of substance and richness. A champagne that doesn't cut through food but embraces it, powerful enough to stand up to even a Bolognese. Anyone who still thinks Meunier is the little sister of the great grape varieties should start here.

My Tastings

Sometimes the most down-to-earth dishes are the best. Yesterday the Bolognese simmered on the stove for hours, that aroma wafting through the whole house is simply unbeatable. The base for the sauce this time was a Cabernet dell'Emilia from Mattarelli: profound, with aromas of dark berries and a touch of chocolate. Exactly this spicy structure needs a champagne in the glass that has serious substance.

The choice fell on the Solo de Meunier. A pure Meunier from Damery that delivers exactly what the name promises: a solo performance with power. It brings notes of ripe apple and almost cinnamon-like compote that harmonize beautifully with the depth of the Cabernet in the sauce. It doesn't cut through the food but embraces it. Whoever says you always need red wine with pasta hasn't tried this Blanc de Noirs yet.
