Champagne La Borderie: Trois Contrées 2021

The Cuvée

Champagne La Borderie comes from the Côte des Bar, the southern outpost of Champagne in the Aube department. Behind the estate in Bar-sur-Seine stands the Normand family: founded by Jean-Louis and Odile, today siblings Simon and Marie Normand run the estate. From 11.5 hectares across seven villages around Bar-sur-Seine, they vinify only a small portion themselves, the rest still goes to the cooperative, with their own production growing piece by piece. They work with HVE and VDC certification.

The Trois Contrées takes its name, the three territories, from an assemblage of three parcels and three grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, the latter a variety that has become rare in Champagne but particularly suits the Aube.

As an Extra Brut, the cuvée initially presents itself as inviting, gentle and charming, but then surprisingly develops depth. Not complicated, rather complex, cleanly made and precise, typically Côte des Bar in its best form. A wine that works solo as a magnificent aperitif, though a suitable, structured dish would bring out even more clarity.

My Tastings

I already knew La Borderie, but not the "Trois Contrées" until now. This bottle was part of a champagne package, and of the four bottles, probably the most accessible. A magnificent aperitif, which is why I opened it first. And solo at that.

And that's exactly what was interesting: At first it seems inviting, gentle, charming, and then suddenly this depth comes through. Not complicated, but complex. A champagne that first draws you in and then makes you think.

I'd say: A pairing would have done this wine really well. Something warm, something with structure, to bring out the balance between Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc even more clearly. But even solo it was clear: This is top material. Cleanly made, precise, harmonious, and typically Côte des Bar in its best form.
