J.B Héry

I've tried 3 champagnes from J.B Héry at home — enough to get a first impression. The house is based in the Grand Cru, Côte des Blancs, Blanc de Blancs Terroir, works with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and shows a clear signature in their range.

J.B Hery is a producer who does what the Cote des Blancs does best: Blanc de Blancs. Period. No experimenting with Pinot Noir, no rosé champagne, no gimmicks. Instead: Chardonnay from Grand Cru sites, grown on chalk subsoil, with the mineral precision that makes this region so unique.

The Cote des Blancs is a narrow strip of land south of Epernay that stretches across some of the most famous villages in Champagne: Cramant, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly. The chalk formations beneath the thin topsoil are particularly pronounced here and act like a natural sponge that stores moisture and releases it to the vines during dry periods. The result is Chardonnays with a crystalline minerality that you won't find anywhere else in Champagne.

What distinguishes J.B Hery from the better-known houses of the Cote des Blancs — such as Pierre Gimonnet, Legras & Haas or the mythical Salon — is the willingness to include older vintages in the program. A Millesime 2002 as Brut Nature is a bold statement: the producer trusts that the quality of the base wines will carry over two decades without needing dosage as a safety net.

Terroir and Location

The champagnes from J.B Héry come from the Grand Cru, Côte des Blancs, Blanc de Blancs Terroir. The Côte des Blancs is the epicenter for Chardonnay and Blanc de Blancs — chalk soils, elegance, minerality. The house has access to Grand Cru sites, which is reflected in the quality of the base wines.

The Grand Cru classification at the Cote des Blancs means maximum quality for Chardonnay. The vines stand on east-facing slopes with optimal sun exposure, and the chalk in the subsoil gives the wines their typical tension and salinity. It's no coincidence that the most expensive champagnes in the world — Salon, Krug Clos du Mesnil — come from exactly these soils.

The Range

J.B Héry offers 3 different cuvées that I was able to try. In the program: Blanc de Blancs, vintage champagne. A focused range that puts quality over quantity.

The Cuvées in Detail

Millésime 2002 Brut Nature

A 2002 Blanc de Blancs as Brut Nature — that's bold and impressive. After more than twenty years, the champagne has developed a patina reminiscent of aged Burgundy: nutty, honey-colored, with an almost waxy texture. But the chalk minerality holds everything together and prevents it from seeming tired. On the contrary: the freshness is remarkable for this age.

My tip: Serve aged champagnes like this slightly warmer than usual — at 50-54°F the complex aromas unfold much better than ice cold.

Signature - Blanc de Blancs

Fine minerality and freshness with delicate creaminess. Elegant structure with citrus and brioche notes. Highlights: Minerality, freshness, creaminess, brioche notes.

The Signature line is the entry level at J.B Hery and already shows what the house can do: clear minerality, fine perlage, no overloaded fruit aromas. The creaminess in the mid-palate reveals longer lees aging than many comparable entry-level Blanc de Blancs. A champagne that isn't loud, but one you should drink attentively.

My Tastings

Conclusion

J.B Hery is a quiet representative of the Cote des Blancs who convinces without volume. Those seeking Blanc de Blancs from Grand Cru sites who don't want to pay the prices of Salon or Pierre Peters will find an honest alternative here. The aged 2002 particularly shows that they work here with patience and trust in their own wines.
