Champagne Pol Couronne | Millésime | Vintage 2008

Tasting Notes

The Œnothèque 2008 is a late disgorged vintage that spent a long time in the house's reserve: 156 months on the lees, roughly thirteen years. You notice it immediately. The youthfulness of the 2008 vintage, a cool, late year with pronounced acidity and plenty of potential, has here turned into maturity without losing its tension. Instead of bright fruit, the deeper notes now take the lead: brioche, toasted hazelnut, a touch of dried fruit, and a nutty, almost chalky finish.

The complete absence of dosage, Zéro Dosage, 0 g/l, makes the wine lean and precise. Nothing masks the matured aromatics, and the vintage's high acidity carries the wine a long way. The assemblage of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir gives both sides room: the Chardonnay brings the taut, mineral line, the Pinot Noir body and structure. A champagne for slow drinking, best enjoyed from a proper wine glass rather than a narrow flute, so the aromas of maturity can actually show themselves.

About the House

Pol Couronne elaborates this champagne in Jonquery, in the Ardre valley, northwest of Reims. The house is a Négociant: it buys in grapes and vinifies them itself, so this is not a grower champagne in the narrow sense of a single estate, but rather the signature of a house that assembles across different sites.
