Jacques Sonnette
I've tasted 4 Champagnes from Jacques Sonnette — enough to get a solid sense of the house. Based in the Vallée de la Marne, they work with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and show a clear signature style across their range.
Jacques Sonnette is a grower from the heart of the Vallée de la Marne — the region often called the valley of Meunier. While the Côte des Blancs stands for Chardonnay and the Montagne de Reims for Pinot Noir, the Vallée de la Marne is home to Champagne's third great grape: Pinot Meunier. A variety that was considered inferior for decades and only accepted as a blending partner. That has changed — and growers like Jacques Sonnette show why.
The Vallée de la Marne stretches along the river west of Epernay. The slopes often face north, which would normally be problematic in Champagne — but Pinot Meunier handles this better than the other varieties. The grape ripens earlier, is more robust against frost, and brings reliable fruit even in cool years. The soils are more clayey and heavy than those at the Côte des Blancs, giving the Champagnes body and warmth.
What convinces me about Jacques Sonnette: The range covers remarkable breadth without seeming random. From the classic Brut Réserve through a serious Prestige Brut to the Blanc de Noirs millésime — here each cuvée is treated as an independent expression of terroir. No filler items, no obligatory offerings.
Terroir and Location
The Champagnes from Jacques Sonnette come from the Vallée de la Marne. The Vallée de la Marne is the home of Pinot Meunier — fruit-forward, approachable, charming.
The clay-containing soils of the Vallée de la Marne give the Champagnes a warm, fruit-forward foundation. Compared to the chalky mineral Champagnes of the Côte des Blancs or the structure-focused Pinot Noirs of the Montagne de Reims, wines from the Vallée de la Marne seem more accessible and immediately appealing. This isn't a weakness, but a stylistic signature.
The Range
Jacques Sonnette offers 4 different cuvées that I was able to try. In the lineup: Blanc de Noirs, Rosé, vintage Champagne. A focused range that puts quality over quantity.
The Cuvées in Detail
Brut Réserve
Ripe fruit with dried apricot, fine toasted notes, bread crust and hazelnut. Round on the palate with volume and a cohesive freshness on the finish. Highlights: balance, dried apricot, toasted notes, hazelnut.
The Brut Réserve is a Champagne that smells like a bakery — and I mean that as a compliment. Dried apricot, bread crust, hazelnut: these are aromas that suggest extended lees aging and mature reserve wines. On the palate it's round and generous without becoming clumsy. The freshness on the finish holds everything together and prevents the Champagne from becoming too heavy. An ideal companion for dinner with friends.
Type: Brut | Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier

Prestige Brut
Balanced, classic Champagne with fine perlage. Ripe citrus notes combine with brioche, apple and subtle floral notes. Highlights: classic, fine, well-balanced, brioche.
The Prestige Brut stands out from the Brut Réserve through greater finesse and precision. The perlage is finer, the aromas more nuanced, the structure tighter. Here you can sense that the selection was more careful — probably older vines, better parcels, longer lees aging. A Champagne that earns the step up from the Brut Réserve.
Type: Prestige Cuvée | Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
Rosé Brut
An uncomplicated Rosé with enough freshness for spicy dishes and charmingly fruity character. Red berries, a touch of citrus and fine spice define the character. Highlights: red berries, citrus, fine spice, lively.
The Rosé is a typical Vallée-de-la-Marne Rosé: fruit-forward, accessible, without excessive depth, but with honest charm. The fine spice notes suggest a small red wine component in the assemblage. Not the Rosé for a contemplative evening, but the perfect companion for a relaxed Sunday afternoon.
Type: Rosé | Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
Blanc de Noirs 2019
A fresh, fruity Blanc de Noirs with clear structure. On the nose red fruits, pâtisserie, white flowers and yellow fruits. Highlights: red fruits, pâtisserie, fresh, good aging potential.
The Blanc de Noirs 2019 shows what the Vallée de la Marne can achieve with its dark grapes. 2019 was a warm vintage, and you can taste it in the ripe fruit and pâtisserie notes. At the same time, there's enough freshness present to signal aging potential. In three to five years this Champagne could show a completely different side — riper, nuttier, more complex.
My tip: Those who don't yet know Blanc de Noirs from the Vallée de la Marne will find a good introduction here. The style is warmer and fruitier than Blanc de Noirs from the Montagne de Reims.
