Champagne Pierre Moncuit — Grand Cru from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
Champagne Pierre Moncuit is a Récoltant-Manipulant from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger on the Côte des Blancs. Founded in 1928 by Pierre Moncuit, who decided to stop selling the family's grapes and start vinifying them himself. Today Valérie Charpentier runs the house in the 4th generation since 2007.
The roots go back further: In 1889 Alex Moncuit, Pierre's father, acquired the first parcels in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Pierre started marketing under his own name in 1928, while his wife Odile Moncuit-Delos took care of sales and customer relations. The third generation – Nicole Moncuit and her brother Yves – shaped the house from the late 1970s. Nicole took over technical management in 1982 and immediately won a gold medal at an international competition with her first vintage.
History
Alex Moncuit laid the foundation in 1889 when he acquired the first vineyard plots in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and began winemaking. His son Pierre decided to go his own way in 1928: He no longer wanted to sell the grapes, but vinify them himself and market them under the family name. Odile Moncuit-Delos, Pierre's wife, handled sales and customer relations and built the first trade relationships.
In 1977, Nicole Moncuit, Pierre's daughter, joined the winery. She quickly developed a passion for viticulture and cellar techniques. Three years later, in 1980, her brother Yves joined and took over marketing. When Pierre stepped back for health reasons in 1982, technical management passed entirely to Nicole. Her first vintage under her own responsibility was immediately awarded a gold medal – the starting shot for international marketing.
In 2007, Valérie Charpentier, Nicole's daughter, took over overall management. She had a modern cuverie built that enables parcel-by-parcel vinification right through to bottling. In 2016, Valérie developed on her own initiative a separate cuvée from the house's own Clos in Vertus, a Premier Cru, with special vinification.
Vignoble & Terroir
The estate manages around 20 hectares, distributed across Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (about 15 hectares Grand Cru), Sézanne (just under 5 hectares) and Vertus (a few ares Premier Cru, including the Clos). The grape variety is exclusively Chardonnay – except for the Rosé, which blends in Pinot Noir.
The average age of the vines is 50 years. The Les Chétillons parcel has 90-year-old vines that are preserved through selezione massale to maintain their heritage character. The soil is characterized by the chalk of the Côte des Blancs, which gives Le Mesnil-sur-Oger its Grand Cru status.
Viticulture & Sustainability
The house has worked according to sustainable farming principles for many years and is pursuing HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale). Quality takes precedence over yield. The selezione massale serves to preserve old vines and continue their genetic heritage, rather than relying on clones.
Vinification
Since 2007, a modern cuverie has enabled parcel-by-parcel vinification right through to bottling. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks. The philosophy is: one cépage, one cru, one millésime. Even for non-millésimés, only one harvest is used whenever possible. Aging times are long and range from three to twelve years depending on the cuvée.

- Rosé Grand Cru Brut · 2024-12-28
First encounter with Pierre Moncuit. The Rosé shows how dramatically temperature can change a champagne's character: served chilled it's mineral and citrus-focused, at room temperature brioche and caramel. A cuvée that rewards patience and curiosity.
