Champagne Sanger

Champagne Sanger: a cooperative that names its numbers

Champagne Sanger is not a family estate. Behind the name stands the Coopérative des Anciens de la Viticulture in Avize, and the code on every bottle says as much: CM 801 002, coopérative de manipulation. The Sanger brand has existed since 1952.

The base is a union of 80 growing families drawing on 42 crus; the core covers 14 hectares. Around 70 percent of that is Grand Cru sites planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The seat is in Avize, right in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, at 33 rue Rempart du Midi.

Anyone writing about this house shouldn't skip over its legal structure. With a cooperative, every Assemblage is also a statement about who carries the house. That's clearest with the Pères d'Origines, an exact fifty-fifty Cuvée of two Grand Cru grape varieties, and with the Voyage 360, which carries all three main varieties in exactly equal thirds, mirroring the entire membership base.

⚠️ A house rule worth knowing

At Sanger, the flavor designation on the back label systematically understates things.

Two bottles carry "EXTRA-BRUT" on the label, while the house's fiche technique lists "Brut Nature": Les Oubliés 2009 (the label even prints the 0 g/L right next to it) and Poème 13 (there the label doesn't give a Dosage figure at all; the cellar master confirmed in writing "non dosées").

For this house, when it comes to Dosage, the fiche counts, not the label. Anyone relying on the printed term ends up filtering out genuine zero-Dosage wines.

Equally important: Sanger writes on several back labels "année principale de vendange", the main harvest year, not a vintage. This applies to Terroir Natal (2019) and Voyage 360 (2022). Both are Cuvées built with reserve wines and not Millésimes, however tempting the year printed on them looks. The fact that the house states the main harvest year, Tirage, and Dégorgement at all is, if anything, the opposite of obscuring things: most houses state nothing at all for a non-vintage Cuvée.

The Cuvées in detail

Les Oubliés 2009 · Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru

100% Grand Cru Chardonnay from Avize, from the named single vineyard "Les Maladreries du Midi." Disgorged in April 2026 after roughly sixteen years on the lees. 0 g/L, Brut Nature per the fiche. Malolactic fermentation blocked on certain tanks, bottled ten months after harvest, without filtration.

The house explains the name itself: the bottles rest in a small vaulted cellar set apart from the rest, under about ten meters of chalk, until riddling and Dégorgement. Nous « oublions » ces bouteilles: they are deliberately forgotten. This isn't a marketing name, it's a working method.

Poème 13 · Millésime 2013, barrel-aged

60% Grand Cru Chardonnay, 20% Grand Cru Pinot Noir, 20% Meunier. Terroirs of Avize, Bouzy, Ambonnay, and Aÿ, with the Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne. Fermented and aged on the lees in 205-liter oak barrels, twelve years of bottle aging, disgorged March 2026, no Dosage, ni filtré, ni collé.

"Poème" is a collection for vintages with character; the 13 is the vintage, not an edition number. The Japanese lettering has a reason behind it: the Cuvée was originally created for the Japanese market and has carried a haiku by Kobayashi Issa on the bottle since launch.

Triangle Minéral 2018 · Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru

100% Grand Cru Chardonnay, Millésime 2018, disgorged March 2026 after a good seven years sur lattes, 5 g/L Extra-Brut.

The designation "parcellaire Avize" does not appear on the label. When asked, the house clarified: there are two parcels, not one, a parcel selection, not a single-parcel wine. The parcel names aren't public. The distinction isn't cosmetic, since with Les Oubliés the single vineyard is named.

Pères d'Origines 2016 · Grand Cru

50% Grand Cru Chardonnay, 50% Grand Cru Pinot Noir, Millésime 2016, disgorged February 2024 after roughly seven years on the lees, 6 g/l, declared as Brut.

6 g/l would technically still fall within Extra-Brut range; here that's not a contradiction, but a conservative choice right at the border.

Terroir Natal · Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru

100% Grand Cru Chardonnay, main harvest year 2019, Tirage 2020, disgorged April 2025, 4 g/l Extra-Brut. Roughly five years sur lattes for an entry-level Cuvée, and the most precisely declared bottle in the range.

Voyage 360

An equal third each of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier. Main harvest year 2022, Tirage 2023, disgorged May 2025, 5 g/L Extra-Brut. The name is the program: a full circle, across the entire membership base.
