Champagne De Sousa: Biodynamics in Avize

Champagne De Sousa is a Récoltant-Manipulant from Avize, a Grand-Cru village on the Côte des Blancs. Erick de Sousa established the biodynamic path, today his three children Charlotte, Valentin and Julie de Sousa continue leading the house.

The estate manages around 9.5 hectares, with the core in the Grand-Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. A special feature is the high average age of the vines at over 45 years. For the cross-regional cuvées, additional material comes from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne. The work is organically and biodynamically certified (AB and Demeter), and in the vineyard horses pull the plow.

Viticulture & Sustainability

Starting in 1999, Erick de Sousa was among the first winemakers in Champagne to work biodynamically. Organic certification (AB) followed in 2010, and Demeter recognition for biodynamic management in 2013. In the vineyard, travail équin is employed, with horses replacing tractors on selected parcels. This approach is evident in the work with natural preparations following the lunar calendar and the consistent rejection of synthetic treatments. The prestige line Cuvée des Caudalies comes exclusively from Chardonnay vines over 50 years old and ages in wooden barrels with regular bâtonnage.

Vinification

De Sousa works with spontaneous fermentation and ages part of the wines in wood. The cuvées mature for at least 24 months on the lees. The assemblage philosophy combines Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne, bringing terroir character from different Champagne regions into one bottle.
