Gosset — Oldest Champagne Maison, Founded 1584

Gosset — Oldest Champagne Maison Since 1584

Gosset is the oldest champagne maison in the region, founded 1584 by Pierre Gosset, échevin d'Aÿ and winegrower. The historic headquarters is located in Aÿ (Grand Cru, Montagne de Reims), the domaine today in Épernay. The house is led by Cellar Master Odilon de Varine. The Gosset family was already established in Champagne in 1484, when Jean Gosset was born — a full century before the actual founding of the maison.

History

Pierre Gosset produced still wines from his own vineyards in Aÿ starting in 1584. The maison remained in family hands for centuries and evolved from a still wine to champagne producer. In 1947, Suzanne Gosset set a milestone: she initiated the first rosé champagne in a transparent "white bottle" — an innovation that remains the visual signature of the maison to this day. Suzanne Gosset led the house as Présidente from 1955 to 1965 and remained a defining figure until her death in 1970.

The maison worked for centuries to refine its vineyards and cellar philosophy. Today Gosset stands for long aging periods (minimum 4 years for the base cuvées, up to 21 years for special cuvées) and a dosage philosophy that doesn't mask the wine character, but brings freshness and fruit into balance.

Vignoble & Soil

Gosset sources grapes from several Champagne regions: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and Côte des Blancs. The Chardonnays come from sites where the chalk (craie) comes close to the surface — a central factor for the minerality of the wines. Specifically mentioned are the villages Aÿ (Grand Cru), Chouilly, and Cumières, with the latter also providing the red wine for the rosé assemblage. The exact varietal distribution in their own vignoble and the total area in hectares are not verified.

Vinification

The base wines age in stainless steel tanks (cuves inox) after fermentation. There's no confirmed information about the use of wood for Maison Gosset itself, though there is for Christian Gosset (a separate brand whose connection to Maison Gosset is unclear). The philosophy focuses on long lees aging — minimum 4 years for the Grande Réserve, up to 21 years for extreme cuvées like the "21 ans de cave a minima". The dosage ranges between 0 g/l (Zéro Dosage) and 18 g/l (Petite Douceur Rosé, Extra Dry) and is precisely used to balance freshness and fruit without masking the wine character. The base wines of the Zéro Dosage cuvée age more than a year on lees before being assembled — an unusual effort for a non-dosage cuvée.

The Cuvées in Detail

Grande Réserve Brut

The signature cuvée of the maison, Pinot Noir-dominated with 60% PN, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Meunier. Assemblage of multiple crus, minimum 4 years cellar aging. This cuvée carries the house style: clearly structured, without masking through high dosage, with the maturity that comes from four years on lees.

60% Pinot Noir · 30% Chardonnay · 10% Meunier · 48 Months Aging · Multiple Cru Assemblage

Zéro Dosage

The first zero-dosage champagne from the maison, base vintage 2013. The base wines age more than a year on lees before being assembled into the cuvée — an effort that strengthens the fruit and structure before bottle fermentation begins. No sugar in the dosage, the wine must work from itself.

Base 2013 · 0 g/l Dosage · Base Wines > 12 Months on Lees

Grand Rosé

High Chardonnay content (60%) for finesse, 40% Pinot Noir — partly vinified as white wine, partly as red wine. Minimum 4 years cellar aging. The assemblage from various Champagne crus brings complexity without the dosage masking the wine character.

60% Chardonnay · 40% Pinot Noir (White and Red Wine) · 48 Months Aging · Various Crus

Grand Blanc de Blancs

The first Blanc de Blancs from the maison. 100% Chardonnay from Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs — sites where the chalk comes close to the surface. Minimum 4 years cellar aging, mineral-driven.

100% Chardonnay · 48 Months Aging · Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs

Cuvée Suzanne Gosset

Homage to Suzanne Gosset (1885–1970), who launched the first rosé in transparent bottle in 1947 and was Présidente of the maison from 1955 to 1965. 60% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir, 15% Meunier. The red wine comes from Cumières. The base wines age 9 months on lees before being assembled, then 60 months on second lees in bottle.

60% Chardonnay · 25% Pinot Noir · 15% Meunier · 60 Months Aging · Red Wine from Cumières

Petite Douceur Rosé

Extra-Dry dosage with 18 g/l — unusually high for today's standards, but after 11 years of cellar aging (132 months) the wine carries an aromatic structure that integrates the dosage without tasting sweet. 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir.
