Domaine Hénin: La bulle Libre & Romain Henin

Behind the two brands Champagne La bulle Libre and Champagne Romain Henin stands one and the same family domaine in Aÿ, with its own plots in Aÿ, Chouilly, and Mareuil-le-Port (Cerseuil), organic and Demeter certified.

The division of roles is clear, even if it's easy to misread from the outside: La bulle Libre is the domaine's main brand, launched with the takeover of the estate in 2022, first by Romain, and now Romain and Thomas Hénin run the domaine together. The Romain Henin brand is only a small part of production, a secondary line. What the family truly produces carries the name La bulle Libre.

Important for context: This is not a Négoce. Both brands are made exclusively from grapes grown on the family's own parcels. And both share the same approach, the same team, the same philosophy, in the vineyard as well as in the cellar.

Vineyard & Soil

The vineyard holdings are spread across Aÿ (Grand Cru), Chouilly (Grand Cru, Côte des Blancs), and Mareuil-le-Port (Vallée de la Marne). The exact acreage and grape variety breakdown are not currently documented. The Cuvées I've tasted show both a varietal Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne and a classic Assemblage with an emphasis on Meunier and Pinot Noir.

Viticulture & Sustainability

The domaine works as a "Vigneron Champenois Nature" with minimal intervention, AB and Demeter certified. The philosophy aims for maximum authenticity and reduction, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, for both brands alike.

Vinification

The Champagnes are aged in the traditional way, kept natural, and bottled unfiltered and unfined. Dosage sits at 0 g/l, all known Cuvées are Brut Nature. No added sulfur, no fining, no filtration. The Champagnes are meant to show, with all their rough edges, what the grapes bring. This isn't the easy path, it's a bet on healthy fruit and a steady hand.

The Cuvées in Detail

Meunier tu dors

A varietal Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne, under the main brand La bulle Libre. Base 2022, Dégorgement September 2025, though the label mistakenly shows December 8, 2025. No added sulfur, unfiltered, with juicy, meaty Meunier fruit, a purist structure, and incredible energy. A Champagne with rough edges. The label was designed by Nicolas Sautel (tartinetattoo).

100% Meunier · Brut Nature (0 g/l) · Base 2022 · Vallée de la Marne · Brand: La bulle Libre

L'Odyssée Pétillante Chapitre I

A classic Assemblage with an emphasis on Meunier, vintage 2022, from plots around Aÿ, also under the brand La bulle Libre. Traditionally aged, kept natural, no filtration, no fining. Citrus, chalk, green apple, and floral notes; taut and saline with a fine Perlage. Recommended serving temperature 6 to 8 degrees. The label was designed by Quentin Maza.

50% Meunier · 40% Pinot Noir · 10% Chardonnay · Brut Nature (0 g/l) · Base 2022 · Plots around Aÿ · Brand: La bulle Libre

Le Gamin du Terroir

The Cuvée of the secondary line Champagne Romain Henin: vinified biodynamically, without sulfites, from plots in Aÿ and Mareuil-le-Port. Powerful, direct, and unpolished, with vibrancy and clarity on the palate. Taut and precise, yet remarkably round.

Pinot Noir, Meunier, Chardonnay · Brut Nature · Aÿ, Mareuil-le-Port · Brand: Romain Henin
