Pommery: Birthplace of the First Brut

Pommery is one of the great champagne houses in Reims. Founded in 1858, the house is located at Place du Général Gouraud. Its historic achievement: in 1874 Pommery created the first Brut champagne in Champagne history.

History

The house was founded in 1858 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno. When Alexandre died that same year, his widow Louise Pommery took over leadership, becoming one of the most influential businesswomen in Champagne. In 1874 she launched Pommery Nature, the first true Brut on the market: at a time when champagnes were dosed much sweeter, this set a new standard with less sugar and more expression of the grapes. Equally influential was her development of the Crayères, an 18-kilometer network of 120 Gallo-Roman chalk pits about 30 meters beneath Reims, where the bottles age at constantly cool temperatures. Louise Pommery was the first woman to receive a French state funeral in 1890. In her honor, the house's prestige cuvée, Cuvée Louise, bears her name.

The Cuvées in Detail

Brut Royal

Pommery Brut Royal combines ripe fruit notes of nectarine and mirabelle plum with brioche aromatics. The balance of fruitiness and minerality is carried by refreshing acidity. A fresh, approachable Brut without technical interference.

Brut Rosé

This rosé shows red berries and a hint of candy sweetness. The opening seems too softly dosed, on the palate it lacks drive, the harmony between fruit, acidity and dosage is not quite balanced.
