Ruinart: The World's Oldest Champagne House

Champagne Ruinart was founded in 1729 in Reims and is considered the world's oldest champagne house. The Maison specializes in Chardonnay, particularly in Blanc de Blancs. Its headquarters are located at 4 Rue des Crayères in Reims, Montagne de Reims.

History

1729 marks the beginning of an almost three-hundred-year champagne history: Nicolas Ruinart founded the world's first officially registered champagne house in Reims. He was inspired by his uncle, the Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart, whose enthusiasm for the new sparkling wine provided the impetus.

A centerpiece of the house is the Crayères, centuries-old chalk cellars several meters beneath Reims. Ruinart acquired this Gallo-Roman labyrinth starting in 1768 and stores its bottles at a constant 10 to 12 degrees, with ideal humidity and darkness. In 1931, the Crayères were declared a French historical monument, and in 2015 the chalk cellars of Champagne were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Style & Cuvées

Ruinart consistently places Chardonnay at the center and significantly shaped the Blanc de Blancs category. The style is bright, fresh and elegant. At the top stands the Prestige Cuvée Dom Ruinart, named after the monk who inspired the house.

The Cuvées in Detail

Blanc de Blancs

Fresh, crystal clear and lively. Aromas of lemon, white peach and pineapple, on the palate fine minerality with subtle brioche notes. The iconic bottle is inspired by historical bottles from the 18th century.
