Champagne Louis Brochet — Premier Cru from Ecueil
Champagne Louis Brochet is a Récoltant-Manipulant house from Ecueil (Premier Cru) in the Montagne de Reims. The family's history dates back to the 19th century, when Marie Arsène Brochet introduced sélection massale in the vineyard. In 1881, Louis Brochet was born — 100 years before his great-great-grandson Louis, who today runs the 4th generation together with his sister Hélène Brochet since 2013.
The house operated as Domaine Brochet-Hervieux until 2011, named after Henri Brochet and Yvonne Hervieux, who led the estate for around 70 years. When Hélène and Louis took over, the brand was renamed Champagne Louis Brochet — a tribute to the great-grandfather who introduced the first label with his own name around 1900, an innovative step at the time.
History
Marie Arsène Brochet marked the best vines for grafting over three years in the early 19th century — an early form of sélection massale that laid the foundation for the family's quality work. Louis Brochet, born in 1881, introduced the first Champagne-Louis-Brochet label, a pioneering achievement at a time when many growers still delivered anonymously to large houses.
In 1943, the domaine officially established itself in Ecueil. Henri Brochet and Yvonne Hervieux started commercial production around 1950 under the name Domaine Brochet-Hervieux and developed the brand over roughly 70 years. Alain Brochet and his wife Brigitte expanded the Récoltant-Manipulant activity further from 2000.
Hélène Brochet joined the domaine in 2005. Her brother Louis, born in 1981 — exactly 100 years after his namesake — created his first personal cuvée Extra-Noir in 2010. The renaming to Champagne Louis Brochet took place in 2011. In 2013, Hélène and Louis took over the leadership together. Between 2014 and 2015, they expanded the vineyard by three parcels — Jacquessonne (Branscourt), La None (Tréslon) and Mont Benoit (Villers-aux-Nœuds) — totaling 80 ares. In 2017, the house received Viticulture Durable en Champagne and HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certifications, covering 125 measures from vineyard management to waste disposal.
Vineyard & Soil
The vineyard spans 13 hectares, distributed across 50 parcels in four villages: Ecueil (Premier Cru), Branscourt, Tréslon and Villers-aux-Nœuds. The focus is on Pinot Noir, which makes up three-quarters of the vineyard area. Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier are also grown, though exact percentages aren't officially communicated.
The soils are chalk-dominated, typical for the Montagne de Reims. The family focuses on sustainable soil care: organic fertilizers and progressive mechanical soil cultivation are gradually replacing chemical weed control. Chemical insecticides are not used.
Viticulture & Sustainability
Management follows the principle of Culture raisonnée: respect for nature and seasons, gradual reduction of chemical interventions, natural fertilizers. The HVE certification and the Viticulture Durable en Champagne label confirm their commitment — 125 measures in the areas of vine protection, soil care and resource management were certified in 2017. Investments in environmentally friendly equipment are part of ongoing development.
No chemical insecticides, mechanical soil cultivation instead of herbicides, organic natural fertilizers — these building blocks form the foundation for vineyard work.
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. For special cuvées like Extra-Noir, oak barrels from local forests are used. Extra-Noir deliberately undergoes no malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness and vibrancy — the wood provides complexity and sweetness while the acidity remains lively.
Since 2017, the Réserve Perpétuelle RP 10 exists, a Soléra system from Pinot Noir: The 2010 base was blended over seven years (2010–2016) in variable proportions with subsequent vintages, stored in stainless steel. The 2017 release was done traditionally with cork stoppers and agrafe, dosed as Brut Nature (0 g/l).
Dosage ranges from 0 g/l (Brut Nature) through 6 g/l (Extra-Brut) and up to 12 g/l (Brut), 40 g/l (Demi-Sec). The liqueur d'expédition consists of reserve wine and beet sugar. Oenologist Louis Brochet is responsible for assemblage. Aging lasts 24–36 months for BSA cuvées, vintages age longer.
The house controls the entire production process — from harvest to labeling. Traditional Champagne methods and the pursuit of balance and exceptional quality shape the philosophy.
