Champagne Edouard Brun

Champagne Edouard Brun — Cooper DNA in Aÿ

Champagne Edouard Brun is a maison from Aÿ-Champagne in the Montagne de Reims. Founded in 1898 by Edouard Brun, born in 1875 into a cooper family. Today the 4th generation runs the maison: Philippe Delescot (vineyard & winemaking) and Emmanuel Delescot (finance & sales) have been leading since 1994. The company has operated as a Société Anonyme since 1960.

The maison manages around 10 hectares of their own vineyard across six villages: Aÿ-Champagne, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d'Or, Hautvillers, Chigny-les-Roses and Ludes. All of their own plots are classified as Grand Cru or Premier Cru.

History

Edouard Brun was born in 1875 into a cooper family – the craft of barrel-making would later become the DNA of the maison. In 1898, he founded Champagne Edouard Brun together with some friends as a société à commandite simple.

In 1927, Edmond Lefèvre, son of winegrowers, joined the company. A year later, in 1928, the current buildings were constructed. After Edouard Brun's death in 1952, Edmond Lefèvre took over the leadership and converted the business into a Société Anonyme in 1960.

In 1968, Edmond Lefèvre retired, and his children M. et Mme Delescot-Lefèvre continued running the maison. Since 1994, Philippe and Emmanuel Delescot have supported their parents – and today carry the maison into its fourth generation.

Vignoble

The family vineyard encompasses around 10 hectares, spread across six villages in the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne. All plots are classified as Premier or Grand Cru. All three Champagne grape varieties are represented – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier – though the exact distribution is not documented.

The maison employs environmentally sustainable growing methods as a permanent commitment.

Vinification

The vinification follows the founder's cooper DNA: Pinot Noir from Grand Cru and Premier Cru is traditionally fermented in oak barrels (205 liters) and foudres. Chardonnay and Meunier are aged in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation is conducted or blocked depending on the cuvée – Blanc de Blancs undergoes it, while Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut deliberately skips it.

The dosage ranges from Brut Nature (0 g/l) to Demi-Sec (35 g/l). The maison focuses on careful assemblage by villages, crus and grape varieties to achieve a consistent house style. Respect for Champagne tradition and the heritage of wood vinification shape their philosophy.

The Cuvées in Detail
