Champagne Philippe Gonet: Blanc de Blancs from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger

Champagne Philippe Gonet: Blanc de Blancs from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger

Champagne Philippe Gonet is based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the great Grand Cru villages for Chardonnay on the Côte des Blancs. The house specialises in Blanc de Blancs and brings out the cool, taut chalky minerality of Le Mesnil. The contact at the house is Chantal Bregeon-Gonet.

Vignoble & Soil

Le Mesnil-sur-Oger sits on deep chalk that gives the Chardonnay its longevity and its salty, mineral tension. The name of the prestige cuvée Belemnita refers to the belemnites, fossilised cephalopods in the chalk subsoil typical of these sites.

Vinification

The focus is on single-variety Chardonnay, from Brut Nature to Extra Brut, with long lees ageing for depth and texture. Further vinification details remain open where no reliable source exists.

The Cuvées in Detail

Belemnita Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs 2009

Single-variety Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru, finished as Extra Brut and, with around 17 years of ageing, the higher-positioned cuvée of the house. Deep chalky minerality, taut tension and the calm of a long-aged Blanc de Blancs.

100% Chardonnay · Extra Brut · approx. 17 years of ageing · Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru

Cuvée 3210 Brut Nature

Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature, with no dosage. A purist Chardonnay that shows the minerality without any sugar cosmetics.
