Champagne Mater & Filii: Passing It On as a Program
Mater & Filii means mother and sons. The house is based in Dormans in the Vallée de la Marne, at 4 Rue du Maréchal Foch, and carries the name not just in its seal. On the back label of the Eximia, it's spelled out in full:
The contact person is Jérôme Dhuicq, and the operating number is RC-30388-01. The house profile names 1643 as the founding year. The labels carry two sustainability marks: Viticulture Durable en Champagne and Haute Valeur Environnementale, documented farming practices, but explicitly no organic label.
What Sets This House Apart From Its Neighbors
In the Vallée de la Marne, Meunier is the defining variety, and Mater & Filii doesn't treat it as a third choice. On the label of the single-plot wine Clos David, it's described as "le cépage roi et exigeant de la Vallée de la Marne", the royal and demanding variety of the region. That's a statement against the usual pecking order.
There's a second, rarer trait as well. The vintage Cuvée Eximia doesn't build the vintage around a single grape variety, as most houses do, but instead brings all three together in exactly equal parts. Here, the equal split is the statement, not the absence of a decision.
The Cuvées in Detail
Eximia · Millésime 2015
Harvest 2015, tirage 2016, 7 g/l, described on the label as faiblement dosé and declared as Brut. 12% vol.
The label calls the Cuvée "un hommage aux trois principaux cépages champenois" – Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Noir, chacun présent, à part égale. It doesn't print percentages; the equal third is the stated figure.
The house's recommended serving temperature is 8 to 10°C, suggested with seafood, white meat, foie gras, and aged cheeses.
⚠️ The label of the Eximia 2015 is currently being redesigned. Photos may show the outgoing design.

#BrutVintage #ValleeDeLaMarne @gabriel_glas @mygabrielglas @laclaye @grad.dk @grad_rd #MaterEtFilii #Vintage2015 #TheChampagneGuy
Auf Instagram weiterlesen →A single-plot Cuvée from the estate's oldest vine, 60 years old, planted exclusively with Meunier, made solely from grapes of the 2022 harvest. Vinified and aged in wood. 0.5 g/l, declared as Extra-Brut, 12% vol.
The house recommends it with oysters, poultry with morels, scallops, or a sabayon.
⚠️ The label does not state a disgorgement date.
Blanc de Noirs · Extra-Brut
Harvest 2019, bottling 2020, disgorgement 2023. 3 g/l, Extra-Brut, 12% vol. The label describes the Cuvée as an expression of the aromatic power of Pinot Noir, "tout en retenue," meaning restrained. For a Blanc de Noirs, that's a counterpoint to the usual promise of power.
⚠️ The label states neither grape variety proportions nor a vintage. "Blanc de Noirs" generally allows for Meunier; whether the Cuvée is a single varietal is not clear from the available documentation. The 2019 harvest appears in the technical sheet, not on the bottle; the house does not market it as a Millésime.
