Champagne Dérot-Delugny: Meunier Expertise from Crouttes-sur-Marne

Champagne Dérot-Delugny is a Récoltant-Manipulant from Crouttes-sur-Marne, in the far west of the Vallée de la Marne. Founded in 1929 by Philippe Dérot and Yvonne Delugny, the house is now run in its fourth generation by Laurent Dérot (since 2010) and his sister Claire (since 2014). Across 13.5 hectares, all in Crouttes-sur-Marne, the maison combines Meunier tradition with remarkably experimental cellar work.

History

In 1929, Philippe Dérot and Yvonne Delugny founded their maison and introduced a distinctive feature: they planted Pinot Gris, historically also called Fromenteau, in their vineyards. This grape variety would become part of the house's DNA.

In the 1950s, Bernard and Yvette Dérot took over responsibility. They doubled the vineyard area and opened themselves to Chardonnay, which led to the introduction of a Blanc de Blancs to their range. Bernard Dérot's intuition to bring Chardonnay to Crouttes-sur-Marne was a key moment for the house.

The third generation, François and Marie-Odile Dérot, took over in 1990. They added Pinot Noir to the grape variety portfolio and replanted Pinot Gris in the late 1990s to honor the origins of the house.

2010 marked the beginning of the fourth generation with Laurent Dérot's entry. In 2014, his sister Claire joined. Together they led the maison into a phase of certification: in 2017, Dérot-Delugny received HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and VDC (Viticulture Durable en Champagne) at Level 3.

Vignoble & Soil

The 13.5 hectares are located exclusively in Crouttes-sur-Marne, with a clear grape variety distribution: around 70% Pinot Meunier, just under 20% Pinot Noir, just over 7% Chardonnay, and just under 4% Pinot Gris.

Meunier dominates the picture, typical for the western Vallée de la Marne. The small Chardonnay portion is intentionally placed, Bernard Dérot's heartfelt decision to bring Chardonnay to Crouttes, which today allows for precise Blanc-de-Blancs cuvées. And the Pinot Gris, introduced by the founders and revived by François Dérot, is a true rarity that flows exclusively into the Retour en Avant cuvée.

Viticulture & Sustainability

Dérot-Delugny has always managed its vineyards with sustainable logic, formalized in 2017 through HVE and VDC at Level 3. The philosophy is long-term oriented: no quick changes, but rather a gradual renewal of vines and continuous adaptation to soil and climate.

Vinification

The cellar work gets exciting, as aging happens partly in stainless steel, partly in wood, and with character: two Rhône barrels from Condrieu for the single-variety Meunier Coteaux-Champenois, a Burgundy barrel for the Pinot Noir red wine that goes into the rosé d'assemblage.

Around half reserve wines provide depth. After fermentation, wines age for at least one year in tank, tirage follows in October, marketing happens after three to five years of bottle aging, with vintages only after ten. Individual cuvées like Milieu Naturel are bottled with spontaneous fermentation, unfiltered and unfined. Dosage ranges between 0 and 6 grams.
