Champagne Michel Furdyna — Seven Grape Varieties from Celles-sur-Ource

Champagne Michel Furdyna is a Récoltant-Manipulant from Celles-sur-Ource in the Côte des Bar (Aube department). Founded in 1974 by Roman Furdyna, who began the family's champagne story. Today Michel Furdyna leads the maison — as winegrower and head since 1974.

The maison farms vines across five villages: Celles-sur-Ource, Landreville, Loches-sur-Ource, Neuville-sur-Seine, and Plaines-Saint-Lange. Michel Furdyna cultivates seven grape varieties: Pinot Noir (the Cépage Roi of the Côte des Bar), Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier, and the rare varieties Arbane, Petit Meslier, and Pinot Gris.

History

The family's champagne line starts in 1974 with Roman Furdyna, who produced the first bottles under his own name. Michel Furdyna took over leadership that same year and began the "path of medals," which continues today — the maison has collected over 80 national and international awards.

In 2015, Michel introduced the cuvée La Romane, a tribute to his father Roman. The cuvée is a 100-percent Pinot Blanc champagne, aged in oak barrels from Châtillonnais and Allier — atypical and rare.

Viticulture & Sustainability

Michel Furdyna has practiced viticulture raisonnée for many years, with respect for nature and the environment. The maison is Terra Vitis certified, a label for sustainable, controlled viticultural practices.

The approach remains deliberately tailored to the conditions of the Côte des Bar: respect for the earth, respect for the environment — without marketing hype, but with seven grape varieties in the portfolio, three of which (Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Gris) belong to champagne's rare guard.

Vinification

Vinification takes place entirely on the estate, between tradition and modernity. Michel Furdyna uses stainless steel tanks for fresh, fruit-forward cuvées like the Carte Blanche. For the prestige lines — La Romane and Etincelles — he employs oak barrels from Châtillonnais and Allier.

The dosage range extends from Brut Nature (0 g/l) to Demi-sec (12+ g/l). Michel offers several cuvées in different dosage variants, such as the Réserve as both Brut and Brut Nature.

The Cuvées in Detail

Carte Blanche — Brut / Demi-sec

The maison's base cuvée is an assemblage of four grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Meunier. Aged in stainless steel tank, 24 months aging. Michel calls it "floral and elegant" — in tasting it shows soft, fruity with fine spice and good balance. The Carte Blanche won Gold at the 2025 Concours Général Agricole Paris and collected numerous other medals.
