The Premier Cru classification

The 42 Premier Cru villages of Champagne were classified between 90 and 99 points on the traditional Échelle des Crus, just below the Grand Cru threshold of 100. For many growers, these villages are Champagne's sweet spot: Grand Cru level quality in soil and microclimate, often at significantly lower grape prices.

The distribution covers the three classic subregions: Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne. Côte de Sézanne and Côte des Bar have no Premier Crus.

The Échelle scale was officially abolished as a price mechanism in 2010, but the classification of Premier Cru villages remains: wine made from 100% grapes of these communes may carry "Premier Cru" on the label.

Montagne de Reims (Premier Crus)

Most Premier Crus cluster around the Grand Cru villages of the Montagne. Trépail and Villers-Marmery are the two Premier Crus on the eastern side, known for Chardonnay on the Montagne.
